Delta Carry-On Weight Limit, and How Other Airlines Compare

The Delta carry-on weight limit does not really exist for most fares: Delta polices size, not weight, on nearly every route. Does Delta have a carry-on weight limit?
Not in the way American domestic flying trains you to expect. Delta’s own baggage policy caps a carry-on at 22 x 14 x 9 inches, 45 linear inches combined. It states no weight limit applies, on the reasoning that you must be able to lift the bag unaided. American, United and Southwest publish the same stance.
The exception is three airports: Singapore Changi, Beijing Capital and Shanghai Pudong. JetBlue’s own carry-on page states one policy for every fare. The bin bag is capped at 22 x 14 x 9 inches, the personal item at 17 x 13 x 8 inches, with no weight restriction beyond being liftable unassisted.
Several third-party packing guides claim Blue Basic passengers lose the carry-on and keep only the personal item. JetBlue’s current help page makes no such fare distinction. If a guide tells you otherwise, check jetblue.com directly before packing around a rule that may not apply to your fare.
Does Alaska Airlines penalize Saver fares on carry-on?
No, and that puts Alaska ahead of most competitors on this point. Saver, the airline’s basic economy tier, carries the same 22 x 14 x 9 inch carry-on and one personal item as every other fare. Where Saver actually restricts you is seat selection and change flexibility, not the bag you bring aboard.
Since the Hawaiian Airlines merger, both brands publish carry-on rules from the same combined baggage pages. A codeshare between the two now carries one consistent standard rather than two.
Does United Basic Economy include a carry-on bag?
It depends entirely on the route, and this is where United genuinely differs from Alaska and JetBlue. On domestic Basic Economy fares, United allows a personal item only.
Bringing a full-size bag to the gate means checking it. United’s own fare page lists a checked-bag fee plus a separate $25 gate handling charge, as of 2026.
On trans-Atlantic, trans-Pacific, and Canada, Mexico and South America routes, Basic Economy includes the full carry-on plus personal item, the same as any other fare. MileagePlus Premier members, qualifying credit cardholders and Star Alliance Gold members are also exempt from the domestic restriction.

Allegiant’s official baggage page sets the carry-on at 10 x 16 x 22 inches (25 x 40 x 55 cm) with no published weight limit. The personal item, 8 x 14 x 18 inches, is free on every fare.
The carry-on itself is not free on any Allegiant fare. It is priced through the airline’s booking flow and rises the later you add it, cheapest at booking and most expensive at the counter or gate. Allegiant publishes no fixed dollar figure, so check the fee when you book rather than trusting an older guide.
Frontier runs the same model. Its own bag options page defers to a “Bag Price Checker” that varies by route and date, with airport pricing higher than booking ahead. The carry-on itself is capped at 24 x 16 x 10 inches and 35 lb.

Outside the United States, the pattern flips: dimensions loosen slightly and weight becomes the real limit.

What it costs if your carry-on doesn’t fit
The cost of a rejected carry-on scales with how late in the process it gets caught. Buying the allowance online in advance is cheapest on Allegiant and Frontier. Check-in costs more, and the airport counter costs more again.
A bag stopped at the boarding gate is the most expensive point of all, since it now competes with cabin space that’s about to disappear.
On United’s domestic Basic Economy, a gate-checked bag adds the standard checked fee plus the separate $25 gate handling charge on top, not instead of it.
