A passport office near me is almost always an acceptance facility: one of more than 7,500 post offices, clerk’s offices and libraries that take new applications. A State Department passport agency is different. It sees only people traveling abroad within 14 days, or needing a foreign visa within 28, and only by appointment, with a $60 expedite fee added.

You searched this because you need a passport, a renewal or a fix, and the map shows several buildings with “passport” in the name. They do different jobs, and turning up at the wrong one costs you a morning.

The State Department does not accept digital or mobile driver’s licenses at a passport appointment, as of September 2026. Bring the plastic card.

Is a passport office the same as a post office?

Usually, yes. The State Department lists more than 7,500 acceptance facilities across the country, mostly post offices, clerks of court, public libraries and county offices. Staff there check your documents, witness your signature and send the application on to be processed.

A passport agency is a separate building, run by the State Department itself. The department’s own table lists 28 agencies and centers in September 2026, from Boston to Honolulu. They exist for travel that is genuinely close, not as a faster post office for everyone.

Renewals are the surprise for most people. An acceptance facility cannot take a renewal at all; eligible adults renew by mail or online instead.

When do you actually need a passport agency?

Only when the calendar leaves no room for mail. You qualify for an appointment if you travel abroad within 14 calendar days, or need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days. The agency asks for proof, such as a ticket, an itinerary or a hotel reservation.

A separate life-or-death route covers travel in the next 2 weeks because an immediate family member abroad has died, is dying, is in hospice care, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. The State Department counts parents, legal guardians, children, spouses, siblings and grandparents. Aunts, uncles and cousins do not qualify.

Note: earlier versions of this guide described a 72-hour emergency window. The State Department’s current page, updated in 2026, uses 2 weeks, and needs a death certificate, a mortuary statement or a signed letter on hospital letterhead.

How do you make an appointment for a passport?

It depends on which office you need. The two systems are separate, and neither charges for a booking.

Booking a post office

Go to the USPS Retail Customer Appointment Scheduler at usps.com/scheduler.
Choose the passport service, and add photo service if you need a picture taken.
Enter the number of adults and minors, then search by location or by date.
Confirm, and keep the confirmation number to change or cancel later.

USPS also books through lobby self-service kiosks and at the counter, and a few locations keep limited walk-in hours. It does not book renewals.

Booking a passport agency

Open the State Department’s Online Passport Appointment System.
Enter your travel details to see whether you qualify.
Confirm a code sent by email, then a second one by text.
Pick a date and time within 15 minutes, or the held slot is released.

One booking covers up to 7 people in a household. If you already applied and your trip became urgent, call 877-487-2778 instead: weekdays 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern, weekends 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Note: the State Department says it does not charge for appointments and treats any request to pay for one as fraudulent. It may not honor slots booked through third-party sites.

Processing time is only the middle of the wait. The State Department quotes these figures in September 2026, and adds that mail can take up to 2 weeks in each direction.

These are not the only five. They are the ones with real search volume, and all run by appointment only, closed on federal holidays.

Every application gets a 9-digit locator number. Its first 2 digits name the agency or center processing it, which helps when you call about an application already in the system.

Chicago Passport Agency

At 101 Ida B. Wells Drive, 9th floor, formerly addressed as 101 W. Congress Parkway. Thursday opens later, at 10 a.m., and applications it processes start with 18.

Atlanta Passport Agency

At 230 Peachtree St NW, Suite 1000, between the Hotel Indigo and a Chase Bank. Open 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, with locator numbers starting 74.

Houston Passport Office

The agency sits in the George Thomas “Mickey” Leland Federal Building, 1919 Smith Street, 4th floor. It now opens at 7 a.m., earlier than this guide previously stated, and its locator prefix is 79.

Miami Passport Office

At the Omni Center, 1501 Biscayne Blvd, Suite 400. Its 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours are the shortest of the five, and its locator prefix is 51.

San Diego Passport Agency

At 1 Columbia Place, 401 West A Street, 10th floor, entered from the corner of Columbia Street and West A Street. It closes latest of the five, at 4 p.m., and its prefix is 76.

Is the Atlanta passport mega center a passport agency?

No. The USPS location finder lists a Post Office called MEGA PASSPORT CTR at 415 Plasters Ave NE, Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30324. That makes it an acceptance facility, a high-volume one, rather than a State Department agency.

In practice, that means it takes new applications and child applications on an ordinary timeline, and books through the same USPS scheduler as any post office. It cannot issue a passport in days. For travel inside 14 days, you still need the Peachtree Street agency or another on the State Department’s list.

Directory sites give conflicting hours for it, so check the USPS locator before you drive over.

What happens if you show up without an appointment?

At a passport agency, you will not be seen. Every agency on the State Department’s list states “by appointment only”, and staff check the unique details sent with your booking. A slot also cannot be transferred to another person.

At a post office, it depends on the branch. USPS asks first-time applicants to book, and keeps limited walk-in hours at select locations. Check the specific branch in the USPS locator before you go.

Can you renew at a passport office near you?

Not at a post office. Adults eligible to renew do it by mail or online, and USPS says plainly that it cannot renew in person. Online renewal runs only through opr.travel.state.gov, and the State Department warns that any other site offering it may be fraudulent.

Online renewal needs all of these, as of September 2026:

Your current passport was valid for 10 years
It expires within 1 year, or expired less than 5 years ago
You are 25 or older, and not changing your name or sex
You are not traveling for at least 6 weeks, since online renewals cannot be expedited
You are in a US state or territory when you apply

Do not book an agency slot you do not qualify for. The online system checks your travel date against the 14-day and 28-day rules first.
Apply at an acceptance facility with expedited service, adding $60 for 2 to 3 weeks of processing.
Pay the facility for Priority Mail Express to send your application in faster. The cost varies by location.

When a passport office turns you away

Form signed in advance. Print a fresh DS-11 and sign it only in front of the agent.
Photo rejected. Many post offices take the photo on site for a fee; the photo rules list what fails.
No photocopy of your ID or citizenship document. It must be on plain white 8.5 x 11 inch paper, one side only.
