Mail can add up to 2 weeks each way, so the realistic total is up to 7 weeks. Paying $26.87 for 1-3 day return delivery shortens that. Inside 14 days of travel, book an agency appointment instead.
The 2-to-3-week figure is the one everyone quotes, and it is accurate as far as it goes. It measures the time an application spends being processed, not the time it spends in the mail on either side.

What to check before paying for expedited service
- Days remaining until departure, counted from today rather than from when the form gets mailed

- An email address on the application, since that is how status updates arrive

How long does an expedited passport take?
The State Department’s processing-times page, updated 28 September 2026, puts expedited processing at 2 to 3 weeks and routine at 4 to 6 weeks. Its expedite-refund page is more precise: an expedited application is processed within 15 business days.
The clock starts on the day the application reaches a passport agency or center, or the day you ask to upgrade from routine. It does not start on the day you apply.
Mailing is outside that window. The State Department allows up to 2 weeks for an application to arrive, and up to 2 more weeks for a finished passport to reach you by standard return mail.

The State Department’s own advice is to choose expedited service if you travel in less than 6 weeks, and routine if you travel in 6 weeks or more. Applying between October and December helps too, since it names late winter to summer as its busiest season.
How much is an expedited passport?
The $60 expedite fee is charged once per application, whether you want a book, a card or both. It goes on the same check or money order as the application fee.
Return delivery is separate. The 1-3 day option rose to $26.87 on 1 October 2026, up from $23.36, and it applies only to books, since cards always go by First Class Mail.

Where you can and cannot expedite
You can expedite at an acceptance facility, such as a post office or library, or on a mail-in renewal using Form DS-82. Mark expedited on the application and add the $60.
Online renewal cannot be expedited. The State Department’s online system is for routine service only, and it requires no travel for at least 6 weeks after you submit.

Can you get your $60 back if it is late?
Yes, in one specific case. If you paid for expedited service and the application was not processed within the stated 15 business days, you can request a refund of the $60 through the State Department’s online refund form.
You will need your 9-digit application number from the status tool. Refunds take up to 6 weeks to process, and a second request for the same application slows the first one down.
The refund covers the expedite fee only. The application fee, the $35 facility fee, courier charges and the cost of a missed trip are not refunded.
When you need a passport agency appointment instead
Once travel is inside 14 calendar days, or 28 days for a trip that needs a foreign visa, expedited mail service is not fast enough to rely on. That is the threshold for an urgent travel appointment at one of 26 passport agencies and centers.
- If you have not applied yet, use the Online Passport Appointment System. It checks eligibility, verifies you by email and text code, and holds a slot for 15 minutes while you confirm.
- If you already applied, call 877-487-2778, weekdays 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern or weekends 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern.
- Bring proof of travel, such as an itinerary or ticket, plus every document the application needs.

Life-or-death emergencies
A separate service exists for international travel within 2 weeks because an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is dying, is in hospice care, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. That window was 72 hours in older guidance, so many pages still quote it.
Immediate family means a parent or legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling or grandparent. Aunts, uncles and cousins do not count, and travel abroad for your own medical treatment uses the urgent travel route instead.

Are passport courier companies faster?
No. The State Department says a courier will not get a passport processed faster than you could at a passport agency yourself. Couriers sell time in line and paperwork checking, not a shorter government queue.
Advertised courier service fees seen in October 2026 start around $99 to $119, on top of every government fee, and rise steeply for same-day service. First-time applicants still have to appear in person at an acceptance facility on Form DS-11.
Check that a company is on the State Department’s registered courier list before handing over documents. Fees paid to couriers are never refunded by the government.
What happens if you leave it too late
The usual expensive mistake is booking a dated trip first and starting the paperwork second. That turns a routine application into an expedited one at best, and a hunt for a scarce agency slot at worst.
A missed or rebooked flight is never refunded by the State Department. Even the $60 only comes back if processing itself ran late, not because the trip fell inside the mailing time.

Your expedited passport has not arrived
- Wait for “In Process” before worrying. It can take up to 2 weeks after you apply for the status to change, because the application is still moving through mail sorting and intake.
- Check the status tool with your last name, date of birth and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number, or read the email updates.
- Watch for “Passport Mailed”. It is the only update that carries tracking for a book; supporting documents follow separately, up to 4 weeks later.
- Count 15 business days from “In Process”, not from the day you paid, before treating the application as late.
- Call 877-487-2778 if travel is now inside 14 days. Your application locator number tells the agent which agency holds the file.
