How to Book a Passport, REAL ID or Global Entry Appointment
Renewing a passport by mail skips the appointment entirely. REAL ID books through your state DMV, and Global Entry skips its wait with Enrollment on Arrival

The short answer
A passport renewal appointment near you usually is not needed at all: mailing Form DS-82 skips the counter entirely. A first passport or a Passport Agency visit for travel inside 14 days does require one, booked through travel.state.gov. A REAL ID appointment is booked with your state DMV, required or strongly recommended almost everywhere. A Global Entry interview is scheduled through the Trusted Traveler Programs site after conditional approval, or skipped with Enrollment on Arrival.
You start looking up one appointment and end up with three browser tabs open: the State Department, your state DMV, and Customs and Border Protection. Each one has its own login, its own rules, and no mention of the other two.
That is not you missing something obvious. The three systems belong to three different agencies. This covers when each one actually needs booking ahead, how to find an open slot before your trip, and what to do when none show up in time.
What you need before you book anything
- The right form or account: Form DS-82 for a mail passport renewal, DS-11 for an in-person one, your state’s REAL ID portal, or a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account for Global Entry
- A valid government photo ID, plus proof of citizenship such as a certified birth certificate or a valid passport for REAL ID or Global Entry
- The fee ready to pay online, since none of the three refund a missed or wrongly booked appointment
- Your exact travel date, since that is what decides whether you qualify for a Passport Agency appointment at all
How do you book a passport renewal appointment near you?
Most renewals need no appointment at all. If your current passport is undamaged and was issued within the last 15 years, and you were 25 or older at the time, Form DS-82 qualifies. That form goes in an envelope to the National Passport Processing Center, not to a counter.
An in-person visit only comes up for a first passport, a passport for a minor, a renewal that does not qualify for DS-82, or a lost or stolen passport. Those cases use Form DS-11 at an acceptance facility: a post office, library, or clerk of court that has agreed to take applications.
Find one and check whether it takes appointments or walk-ins at the State Department’s facility locator, iafdb.travel.state.gov. The answer varies location by location, so confirm before you drive over.
The Postal Service is the largest network of acceptance facilities and runs its own scheduler at usps.com/scheduler, covering more than 3,700 participating Post Offices with slots up to four weeks out. See where to apply for a passport for how that compares against a regional passport agency, a clerk of court, and other facility types.
When do you need a Passport Agency appointment instead?
Only when your international trip is inside 14 calendar days, or you need a foreign visa inside 28 days. That is the entire qualifying test, checked automatically at travel.state.gov’s Online Passport Appointment System, which covers up to seven members of the same household in one booking.
Appointments at a Passport Agency are free. The State Department is explicit that any site charging a fee to book one is not affiliated with the government, and should be treated as fraudulent.
If your trip is further out than 14 days, an acceptance facility or a mail renewal is the correct path instead. See expedited passport turnaround for how the timeline compares against paying for expedited service rather than an agency visit.
How do you book a REAL ID appointment at your state DMV?
Every state runs its own scheduler, so the exact steps differ. The shape is the same almost everywhere: fill out an application online first, then upload or list your supporting documents. Bring the confirmation code to a DMV office, either on a booked slot or as a walk-in where that is still allowed.
California lets applicants finish the paperwork online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov and walk in the same day with a confirmation code, though the DMV still recommends booking ahead to cut the wait.
New York and New Jersey both describe appointments as strongly encouraged rather than mandatory. New Jersey now releases about 3,000 new REAL ID appointments online every morning at 7 a.m. Texas books all in-office driver license and REAL ID services through its Texas Scheduler, up to 180 days ahead, with same-day slots at some offices.
Is a REAL ID appointment required in your state?
| State | Appointment | Walk-in | Notable detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | Recommended | Yes, with online confirmation code | Under 10 minutes at the window once pre-applied |
| Texas | Effectively required | Same-day, select offices only | Booked through Texas Scheduler, up to 180 days ahead |
| New York | Strongly recommended | Limited | Online pre-screening checks documents before you go |
| New Jersey | Strongly recommended | Limited | About 3,000 new slots released online each morning |
| Virginia | Optional | Mon-Sat at most offices | Appointment holders averaged an 8.4-minute wait in March 2025 |
| Florida | Recommended | Yes | No statewide appointment mandate |
| Washington | Recommended | Varies by office | Bookable online or by phone |
Rules change by office, not just by state. REAL ID by state and REAL ID requirements: Kentucky, Minnesota and North Carolina cover individual state document lists in more depth than a table allows.
How do you book a Global Entry interview appointment?
Global Entry enrollment runs through four steps: create a Trusted Traveler Programs account, complete the application and pay the $120 fee, wait for conditional approval, then schedule an in-person interview from your TTP dashboard. Background checks typically clear within two weeks, though some take up to 12 months depending on what turns up.
Once conditionally approved, log in and select Schedule Interview. You can search enrollment centers by soonest availability or by a specific date, and you are not limited to the center nearest home. A smaller regional center often opens up faster than a busy airport hub.
You have 730 days from conditional approval to complete the interview, after which the application is canceled with no refund. See is Global Entry worth it for the cost and approval time compared against TSA PreCheck alone.
Can you get Global Entry without an appointment?
Yes, through Enrollment on Arrival. If you are conditionally approved, skip the enrollment center entirely and complete your interview with a CBP officer when you land on an international flight, at participating airports. No appointment is needed, though it depends on how busy the lane is that day.
Enrollment on Arrival runs weekdays from 4 to 8 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Eastern, and all day on weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. A similar option, Enrollment on Departure, is available at some airports before you leave the country.
Comparing appointment rules across all three
| Passport | REAL ID | Global Entry | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booked with | travel.state.gov, or a Post Office scheduler | Your state DMV | Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) |
| Appointment required? | Only for urgent travel, or a facility that does not take walk-ins | Varies by state, in-person always required for a first REAL ID | Yes for a first interview, unless using Enrollment on Arrival |
| Cost to book | Free | Free | Free (the $120 fee is separate) |
| No-appointment option | Mail renewal, Form DS-82 | None | Enrollment on Arrival |
| Time limit | 14 days before travel for a Passport Agency slot | Set by your state’s DMV wait times | 730 days from conditional approval |
What happens if you skip the appointment or miss it
A missed Passport Agency slot means requalifying all over again under the 14-day rule, since the appointment does not roll over. A REAL ID that never gets upgraded still lets you drive, but it stops working alone at a TSA checkpoint.
REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. Since then, a traveler without a compliant ID or passport can pay a $45 TSA ConfirmID fee and go through extra screening instead of being turned away outright, though boarding is still not guaranteed.
Missing a Global Entry interview inside the 730-day window cancels the application, and the $120 fee is not refunded. A fresh application, and a fresh fee, is the only way back in.
No appointment shows up near you: what to do
- Check offices outside your immediate area first, since a smaller town or a less-searched enrollment center often has openings a busy one does not.
- Recheck early in the morning, since several DMVs, New Jersey among them, release the day’s new slots at a fixed time rather than all at once.
- Confirm your travel date actually qualifies before assuming you need a Passport Agency appointment, since anything outside 14 days uses a slower, appointment-free path instead.
- Switch to Enrollment on Arrival for Global Entry rather than waiting on an enrollment center, if you already have an international flight booked.
- Contact the agency directly if none of that works: the National Passport Information Center for passports, your state DMV’s phone line for REAL ID, or the TTP help desk for Global Entry.
Frequently asked questions
In short
Most passport renewals skip the appointment question entirely, since a mail renewal never requires one. REAL ID runs through your state DMV, where booking ahead is close to essential in the busiest states and optional in a few others.
Global Entry schedules an interview through TTP after conditional approval, with Enrollment on Arrival as the way around it once you are already flying internationally.
