JetBlue Checked Bag Weight Limit and Fees, 2026 Rules

Traveler pulling a wheeled suitcase outside an airport terminal, JetBlue checked bag weight limit

The short answer

The JetBlue checked bag weight limit is 50 pounds (22.68 kg) and 62 linear inches per bag. Heavier bags up to 99 pounds cost $150 extra. Within the US, the Caribbean and Latin America, a first bag costs $45 off-peak and $49 on peak dates when added at least 24 hours ahead, and $10 more later. Mosaic members, JetBlue cardholders and Mint get free bags.

You have a JetBlue flight booked and want to know how heavy your suitcase can be and what it will cost to check. JetBlue changed its bag prices in March 2026 and renamed its fares in July, so a guide from last year gets both wrong.

This covers the weight and size limits, the fee by date and by how early you pay, who gets a free bag, and what to do when a bag arrives late. Every figure here was checked against JetBlue’s own pages on September 28, 2026.

What to check before you pay for a bag

  • Your travel date. JetBlue charges more on peak dates, and the calendar is published a year ahead.
  • How long until departure. Adding a bag 24 hours or more before the flight saves up to $10 a bag.
  • Your fare name. Main Base, the fare once called Blue Basic, pays for a bag even across the Atlantic.
  • Your Mosaic tier or JetBlue card, which can waive one or both bags for everyone on the booking.
  • Who operates each flight. Partner and codeshare flights follow their own rules, and card benefits stop at JetBlue-operated flights.
  • A luggage scale. A bag at 51 pounds pays the same $150 surcharge as one at 99.

What is the JetBlue checked bag weight limit?

Each checked bag may weigh up to 50 pounds (22.68 kg) and measure up to 62 inches (157.48 cm) when you add length, width and height together. Bags over either figure are still accepted, for a fee, up to a hard ceiling.

Mint is the exception on weight. Mint and Mint Flex customers get two bags included at up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each. Active-duty military traveling on orders may check bags up to 99 pounds.

OversizedUp to 50 lb63 to 80 in$150
Both51 to 99 lb63 to 80 in$300
Not acceptedOver 99 lbOver 80 inShip it instead

JetBlue charges the overweight fee and the oversize fee separately, so a bag that breaks both limits pays both. Some Caribbean and Latin American routes set a lower ceiling: flights to Ecuador and the Dominican Republic refuse bags over 70 pounds.

JetBlue allows 50 pounds and 62 inches per checked bag, and charges $150 for each limit a heavier or larger bag breaks.

How much does a checked bag cost on JetBlue?

Within the US, Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, the price depends on two things: whether you fly on a peak date, and whether you add the bag more than 24 hours before departure. The third bag and every bag after it costs $200 regardless.

BagOff-peak: early / latePeak: early / late
First bag$45 / $49$49 / $59
Second bag$59 / $69$69 / $79
Third and later$200$200

“Early” means added at least 24 hours before departure; “late” means within 24 hours, at check-in or at the airport.

JetBlue’s fee page shows the early prices with the saving built in, for example “$45 (incl $4 savings)”. The late price adds that saving back.

Guides written just after the March 31, 2026 increase quote $39 for an off-peak first bag. JetBlue’s own fee page showed $45 when we checked it in September 2026, so use the Bag Calculator for your exact trip.

The JetBlue first checked bag fee depends on whether the date is peak and whether the bag is added 24 hours ahead.

When peak pricing applies

Peak dates cover the main holidays and most of the summer. The remaining 2026 and early 2027 windows are:

  • October 10 to 14, 2026
  • November 19 to 30, 2026, around Thanksgiving
  • December 2026, though JetBlue’s two fee pages disagree on whether peak starts on December 1 or December 17
  • January 1 to 18, 2027
  • February 11 to 22, 2027

Is a checked bag free on JetBlue?

Not on most Main fares within the Americas, from Main Base up to Main Flex. Free bags come from status, a JetBlue card, Mint, military service, or a transatlantic ticket.

JetBlue’s fare table names seven exceptions where the first bag is included: flights to and from Cartagena, Medellín, Barranquilla, Cali, Guayaquil, Port-au-Prince and Georgetown. Check your booking confirmation if you fly one of those.

What changed with the new JetBlue fares?

For bookings made after July 29, 2026, JetBlue sells four cabins (Main, EvenMore, BlueFirst and Mint), each with up to three fare tiers. Blue Basic became Main Base, Blue became Main, and Blue Extra became Main Flex. EvenMore gained a new Base tier.

The bag rules carried over. Every fare, Main Base included, keeps a full-size carry-on and a personal item. What Main Base loses is seat choice, free changes, and the free first bag on transatlantic routes.

JetBlue carry-on limits, for comparison

The carry-on bag may measure up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches including wheels and handles. The personal item may measure up to 17 x 13 x 8 inches and must fit under the seat. JetBlue sets no carry-on weight limit, only that you can lift the bag into the bin.

Liquids in either bag follow the TSA 3-1-1 rule. What counts as a liquid at TSA covers the edge cases, and carry-on size by airline compares JetBlue with the other US carriers.

JetBlue checked bag fees to Europe

Transatlantic fares work differently. Main, Main Flex and the EvenMore fares include the first checked bag on every flight to the UK and Europe. Main Base does not.

Paid in pounds or euros from Europe, a Main Base first bag costs £65 or €70 off-peak, and £75 or €80 at peak.

A third bag to Europe costs $200 off-peak and $210 at peak, and can only be added at the airport. Checked bags on international flights lines JetBlue up against Delta, United and American on the same routes.

How to add a checked bag for JetBlue

You can add up to two bags while booking, or later in Manage Trips. A third bag can only be added at check-in or at the airport.

  1. Open Manage Trips on jetblue.com, or My Trips in the JetBlue app.
  2. Choose your upcoming trip, then select Bags & extras.
  3. Add up to two checked bags and pay, with a card or with TrueBlue points.
  4. Do it at least 24 hours before departure to get the lower price.
  5. Drop the bag at the airport no more than 6 hours before departure, or 4 hours at Fort Lauderdale and San Juan.

Someone who is not traveling can pay for your bag in Manage Trips with the confirmation code and your last name. Prepaid bags cannot be removed later; the fee is refunded only if the whole booking is cancelled.

Adding bags in Manage Trips at least 24 hours before departure gets the lower JetBlue bag price.

When does JetBlue stop accepting checked bags?

Bags must be checked 45 to 60 minutes before a US domestic departure, and 60 to 80 minutes before an international one. The exact cutoff depends on the airport, so check your departure airport’s page before you leave for it.

Federal rules also mean the passenger who checks a bag must be on the flight. One family member on the same booking may check bags for the whole family with a valid government ID.

Where JetBlue bags go wrong

  • Partner flights. The first airline on your first leg sets the bag rules for a connecting trip, so a JetBlue and American itinerary may follow American’s fees.
  • Seasonal caps. Guyana, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago limit passengers to two checked bags from November 16 to January 15. Ecuador allows two all year.
  • Boxes abroad. Boxes and plastic bins are accepted in the US, but not on international flights except from Vancouver.
  • Rebooking yourself. If you switch flights, JetBlue refunds the bag fee and charges it again at the new flight’s price.

Your JetBlue bag was late or damaged

  1. File a delayed or damaged bag claim online within four hours of landing, or with a JetBlue crewmember at the airport.
  2. Keep receipts for essentials you buy while waiting, and upload them in the claim portal.
  3. Choose delivery to your home or hotel. JetBlue delivers delayed bags at no cost.
  4. Expect the bag fee back automatically if the bag arrives more than 12 hours late on a domestic flight, or 15 hours on an international one.
  5. Report damage to a delivered bag within four hours of delivery, with photos, and confirm any claim in writing within 21 days. American Airlines lost baggage walks through what a full claim needs.

JetBlue asks for a bag claim within four hours of landing and written confirmation within 21 days.

Frequently asked questions

In short

JetBlue allows 50 pounds and 62 inches per checked bag, with a $150 fee for each limit you break and a hard stop at 99 pounds. The first bag costs $45 to $59 in 2026, set by the travel date and how early you pay.

Mint, Mosaic, the JetBlue cards and military service each waive some or all of that. The fare rename kept the carry-on on Main Base but left it paying for every checked bag.
