Are Carry-On Bags Free on United? Basic Economy Bags Are Not
Carry-on and personal item are free on most United fares. Basic Economy drops to a personal item only on most routes, and checked bags rose $10 in April 2026.

The short answer
Are carry-on bags free on United? Yes, on every fare except domestic and short-haul Basic Economy, where most routes allow a personal item only. The carry-on bag returns on Basic Economy tickets to South America and on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes. Checked bags are a separate question. The first now costs $45 prepaid ($50 at the airport), the second $55 prepaid ($60 at the airport), after United raised both by $10 for tickets bought since April 3, 2026.
United’s carry-on rule looks simple until the fare code changes it. Most passengers get the overhead bag without thinking about it, and then book the cheapest fare on a domestic route and find only a personal item allowed at the gate.
This separates the two questions that usually get merged: whether a carry-on is included, and what a checked bag costs. Every figure below is checked against United’s own baggage and fare pages, dated to when each rule or price took effect.
What to check before you fly United
- Your fare code: Basic Economy, standard Economy, Premium Plus, Business or Polaris, since it decides whether a carry-on is included at all.
- Your route, since Basic Economy on flights to South America and across the Atlantic or Pacific keeps the carry-on that domestic Basic Economy loses.
- Your MileagePlus status or United credit card, since either one restores the carry-on and can waive checked-bag fees.
- A luggage scale, since United checks weight separately from size and rounds against you at the counter.
- Your check-in time, since the cutoff to check a bag tightened in 2026.
Is a carry-on bag free on United?
Yes, on every fare, with one exception: domestic and most short-haul Basic Economy tickets. Everyone else, standard Economy through Polaris, gets the carry-on bag and the personal item at no charge, and nothing about the 2026 fee changes touched either one.
Carry-on bag
One bag, up to 9 x 14 x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm), including handles and wheels, fits in the overhead bin. United publishes no weight limit for it, on the same reasoning every US carrier uses: you must be able to lift it yourself.
See carry-on size by airline for how that figure compares to Delta, American and Southwest.
Personal item
One item, up to 9 x 10 x 17 inches (22 x 25 x 43 cm), fits under the seat ahead of you. A laptop bag, purse or small backpack all qualify, and United’s is the tightest personal-item limit of the major US carriers.
Why is there no carry-on on United Basic Economy?
United restricts the overhead bag on Basic Economy to keep that fare’s price down, and the restriction only applies to a specific slice of the network. On most domestic and short-haul routes, a Basic Economy ticket includes the personal item only, and a full-size bag brought to the gate has to be checked there.
The restriction lifts on three route types: flights to South America, and trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific itineraries. There, Basic Economy includes the full carry-on and personal item, the same as any other fare. An older exception for flights to and from Canada applied only to tickets bought before May 28, 2025, and no longer holds for anything booked since.
Three groups skip the restriction regardless of route. MileagePlus Premier members and a companion on the same reservation are exempt, as are Star Alliance Gold members. So are primary holders of most United-branded credit cards, though the Gateway and Select cards are excluded.
Note: a Basic Economy bag that will not fit under the seat still has to be checked. One brought all the way to the gate adds a $25 gate handling charge on top of the standard checked-bag fee, not instead of it.
Are checked bags free on United?
Only in a shorter list of cases than most passengers expect. Every domestic and short-haul Economy and Basic Economy ticket now pays for both checked bags. United raised its fees by $10 across the board for tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026, the first increase in two years.
International Economy is different on the routes it applies to. On trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific itineraries, standard Economy still includes one free checked bag; only the second one is charged. Basic Economy on those same routes does not get that first free bag, and pays for both.
United checked bag fees, domestic and international
| Fare | 1st checked bag | 2nd checked bag |
|---|---|---|
| Economy, domestic and short-haul | $45 prepaid / $50 at airport | $55 prepaid / $60 at airport |
| Basic Economy, domestic and short-haul | $45 prepaid / $50 at airport | $55 prepaid / $60 at airport |
| Economy, trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific | Free | $100 |
| Basic Economy, trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific | $75 | $100 |
| Premium Plus, Business, Polaris, First | Free | Free |
Weight and size limits did not move with the price. A standard checked bag is still capped at 50 pounds (23 kg) in Economy and Premium Plus, and 70 pounds (32 kg) in Business, Polaris and First.
The size cap is 62 linear inches (157 cm), length plus width plus height, on every fare. See checked baggage by airline for how United compares to Delta, Alaska and the rest.
Which passengers still fly free on United?
Free checked bags survived for four groups, and they stack differently from the carry-on exceptions above.
MileagePlus Premier members, from Premier Silver through Premier 1K, check bags free and get a heavier 70-pound allowance even in Economy, a weight limit otherwise reserved for Business and above. Star Alliance Gold members get the same 70-pound Business allowance, or 50 pounds if ticketed in Economy.
Primary holders of most United-branded credit cards get a free first checked bag for themselves and up to one companion travelling on the same reservation. Active-duty military travelling on orders check bags free too, up to a count set by the specific orders, commonly cited at up to five.
| Passenger | Carry-on (domestic Basic Economy) | 1st checked bag | 2nd checked bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Economy or above | N/A, included on non-Basic fares | $45 / $50 | $55 / $60 |
| MileagePlus Premier (Silver-1K) | Free | Free | Free |
| Star Alliance Gold | Free | Free | Standard rate |
| United credit cardholder (+1 companion) | Free | Free | Standard rate |
| Active-duty military on orders | Free | Free | Free |
When do you need to check a bag for a United flight?
United tightened its cutoff in 2026. Since June 3, every domestic passenger, with or without a checked bag, has to be checked in at least 45 minutes before departure, up from 30 minutes previously. International departures need 60 minutes. United says the change aligns the general check-in cutoff with the checked-bag deadline it already enforced.
Check in as early as 24 hours before departure online, in the United app or at an airport kiosk. A bag still has to physically reach the counter, curbside desk or kiosk by the same cutoff; checking in online does not extend the deadline for the bag itself.
What an overweight or oversized bag costs
Weight and size are checked separately, and a bag can pass one and still fail the other. Both are charged on top of whatever the base checked-bag fee already is.
| Bag condition | Extra fee |
|---|---|
| 51 to 70 pounds | $100 |
| 71 to 100 pounds | $200 |
| Oversized, over 62 to 115 linear inches | $200 |
| Over 100 pounds or 115 inches | Not accepted |
A bag that is both overweight and oversized is charged for each separately, not the higher of the two. Carry-on weight limit by airline covers how United’s cabin-bag rules compare if you are connecting onto a different carrier.
Your bag was flagged, gate-checked, or the fee looked wrong
- Ask which limit it failed. Weight and size are measured separately, so a bag can clear one and still fail the other.
- Ask for the exact bracket, not just the word “overweight,” since the fee roughly doubles between the 51-70 lb and 71-100 lb tiers.
- Confirm whether the $25 gate handling charge applies. It is only added when a Basic Economy carry-on is brought to the gate and checked there, not to an ordinary checked bag handed over at the counter.
- Confirm your status or card was applied, if you expected a free bag and were charged anyway. MileagePlus and cardmember benefits are tied to the account on the reservation, not the payment method.
- Redistribute into a second bag if you are travelling with someone, since paying for a second bag is often cheaper than one overweight fee.
- Contact United afterward if a fee still looks wrong once you are off the aircraft, rather than disputing it again at a later checkpoint.
Frequently asked questions
In short
United kept its carry-on and personal item free on every fare except one: domestic and most short-haul Basic Economy. That fare drops to a personal item only, unless the route runs to South America or across the Atlantic or Pacific.
Checked bags are priced by fare and route, and they cost more than they did last year. The first domestic bag is $45 prepaid, the second $55, after a $10 increase for tickets bought since April 3, 2026. MileagePlus Premier members, Star Alliance Gold members, cardholders and active-duty military on orders still avoid that charge.
Check-in itself tightened too: 45 minutes before a domestic departure, 60 before an international one, since June 2026. Rules change without much notice. If something here no longer matches what you were told at the counter, tell us and we will correct it.
