Are Carry-On Bags Free on American Airlines? Checked Bags Cost More

The short answer

There are no carry on fees on American Airlines. Every passenger gets one free carry-on bag and one free personal item, on every fare including Basic Economy. Checked bags are different: since April 9, 2026, the first costs $45 prepaid ($50 at the airport) and the second $55 prepaid ($60 at the airport). Basic Economy pays more still, $50 and $60 prepaid, since May 18, 2026, making American the first US carrier to charge that fare more than Main Cabin for the same bag.

American is the one major US carrier that never took the carry-on away from its cheapest fare. United drops to a personal item only on most domestic Basic Economy routes, and several low-cost carriers charge for the overhead bag outright. American did neither.

This separates what is genuinely free on every American fare from what now costs money, and by how much that cost changed twice in little over a year. Every figure below is checked against American’s own baggage and fee pages, and against the airline’s own announcement of its April 2026 changes.

What to check before you fly American

  • Your fare type: Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Premium Economy or a premium cabin, since it decides your checked-bag price, not your carry-on.
  • Your AAdvantage status or American-branded credit card, since Gold, Platinum and cardmember benefits each waive a different number of bags.
  • Whether you booked and paid before or after April 9, 2026, since the fee that applies follows the ticket date, not the travel date.
  • A luggage scale, since American weighs and measures separately and rounds against you at the counter.
  • Your confirmation number, needed to prepay for a bag online before you reach the airport.

Is a carry-on bag free on American Airlines?

Yes, on every fare, for every passenger, including Basic Economy. American charges nothing for the cabin bag or the personal item, and neither the April nor the May 2026 fee changes touched either one.

That puts carry-on outside the fee conversation entirely on American, unlike on United, where the overhead bag disappears on most domestic Basic Economy tickets. The only limits that apply to American’s carry-on are size and your own ability to lift it into the bin.

Carry-on bag

One bag, up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), including wheels and handles, fits in the overhead bin. American publishes no weight limit for it, on the same reasoning every US major uses: you must be able to lift it yourself.

See carry-on size by airline for how that figure compares to Delta, United and Southwest.

Personal item

One item, up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches, fits under the seat ahead of you. A laptop bag, purse or small backpack all qualify, and it does not count against the carry-on allowance.

Does Basic Economy still include a carry-on on American?

Yes, and this is where American differs most from United. A domestic American Basic Economy ticket includes the same free carry-on bag and personal item as every other fare, with no route exception and no fare-based restriction.

Note: Basic Economy boards last, in Group 9, and overhead space often runs out before that group reaches the cabin. A bag gate-checked for that reason still travels free. What is not free is a bag that never qualified as a carry-on to begin with, oversized or overweight, brought to the gate expecting it to pass anyway.

Are checked bags free on American Airlines?

No, not on Main Cabin or Basic Economy. Every checked bag on those fares now costs money, and the price rose twice inside thirteen months. American raised its domestic and short-haul international fees on April 9, 2026, then raised Basic Economy’s fee again, separately and higher, on May 18, 2026.

Premium Economy, Business, First and Flagship tickets keep a different allowance, and AAdvantage elite status or an American-branded credit card can waive the fee regardless of fare, covered below.

Which bracket applies depends on when the ticket was bought, not when the trip happens.

Six weeks later, American went further for its cheapest fare than any other US carrier had. Since May 18, 2026, Basic Economy passengers pay more for the same bag than a Main Cabin passenger on the same flight.

Size and weight limits did not move with the price. A standard checked bag is still capped at 50 pounds (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm), length plus width plus height, the same figures Delta, Alaska and Southwest use. Which AAdvantage tiers and credit cards still fly free?

Free checked bags survived for elite status and American’s own co-branded cards, and the benefit stacks differently depending on which one applies.

AAdvantage Gold members get one free checked bag. AAdvantage Platinum members get two. AAdvantage Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum members get three, and all four elite tiers also raise the weight allowance on those bags to 70 pounds (32 kg), the figure Business and First passengers already get.

Primary holders of most Citi / AAdvantage credit cards get a free first checked bag for themselves and up to four companions on the same reservation. That requires the AAdvantage number on the booking and an account open at least seven days before the flight.

What an overweight or oversized bag costs

Weight and size are checked separately, and a bag can pass one and still fail the other. Both are charged on top of whatever the base checked-bag fee already is.

71 to 100 pounds$200
Oversized, 63 to 65 linear inches$30
Oversized, 65 to 115 linear inches$200

A bag that is both overweight and oversized is charged for each separately, not just the higher of the two figures. Carry-on weight limit by airline covers how American’s cabin-bag rules compare if you are connecting onto a different carrier.

When do you need to check a bag for an American flight?

At least 45 minutes before a domestic departure and 60 minutes before an international one, measured at the ticket counter, curbside desk or kiosk rather than at security.

A handful of high-traffic international airports set an earlier cutoff. Amsterdam, Athens and Dublin require 75 minutes, and St. Thomas and St. Croix require 90. Checking in online the night before does not move any of these deadlines; the bag still has to physically reach the counter by the same clock.

Your bag was flagged, checked late, or the fee looked wrong

  1. Ask which limit it failed. Weight and size are measured separately, so a bag can clear one and still fail the other.
  2. Ask for the exact bracket, not just the word “overweight,” since the fee roughly doubles between the 51-70 lb and 71-100 lb tiers.
  3. Confirm your AAdvantage number was on the reservation, if you expected a free bag and were charged anyway. Elite and cardmember benefits attach to the account, not the payment method.
  4. Redistribute into a second bag if you are travelling with someone, since paying for a second bag is often cheaper than one overweight fee.
  5. Ask whether the Basic Economy surcharge applied by mistake, if you booked Main Cabin or above and were still charged the higher rate.
  6. Contact American afterward if a fee still looks wrong once you are off the aircraft, rather than disputing it again at a later checkpoint.

Frequently asked questions

In short

American kept its carry-on bag and personal item free on every fare, including Basic Economy, while every checked bag now costs more than it did before April 2026. The first bag rose to $45 prepaid, the second to $55, and Basic Economy pays a further $5 on top of both since May 18.

AAdvantage Gold through Executive Platinum, and the Citi co-branded credit card, still avoid the checked-bag fee outright, with a heavier 70-pound allowance included. Size and weight limits held steady through both fee increases.
