How Many Days in New Zealand? 7 and 14-Day Routes for 2026

The short answer
How many days in New Zealand you need is about 14 for a first trip that covers both islands. That is enough for Auckland, Rotorua, Tongariro and Wellington, then Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Queenstown and Milford Sound. One week is enough for one island. Go from February to April, or in May and June if price matters most.
New Zealand looks small on a map and is not small to drive. The roads are mostly two lanes, the scenery is the reason you came, and the drive from Christchurch to Queenstown takes over seven hours even without stops.
This is the planning guide for the whole country. It sets out three routes, the drive times and ferries that hold them together, the rules that apply everywhere, and what a typical day costs. Every price and time was checked against an official or operator source in October 2026.
Before you book: what applies to the whole trip
- An NZeTA. US, UK and EU passport holders visit visa-free but need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority before they fly. It costs from NZD 17, plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy charged with it. Allow 72 hours.
- How long you can stay. Most visitors get up to 3 months a visit, UK citizens up to 6. Immigration New Zealand asks for a return ticket and at least NZD 1,000 a month to live on.
- Passport dates. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you leave New Zealand. Other nationalities should check the visa requirements by country.
- The arrival declaration. Everyone fills in the free New Zealand Traveller Declaration, online or in the app, no earlier than 24 hours before the trip starts.
- Food and boots. Biosecurity New Zealand can issue an instant NZD 400 fine for an item you fail to declare, even by accident. Declare food, and clean hiking boots before you pack them.
- A licence you can drive on. You can drive on your home licence, on the left. If it is not in English, carry an accurate English translation or an international driving permit as well.
- Insurance and data. Read whether travel insurance is worth it before a trip built on long drives and alpine walks, and check which iPhones support eSIM.
How many days in New Zealand do you need?
Two weeks is the honest answer for a first visit to both islands. With less time, pick one island and see it properly.
| Days | Route | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | One island only | A first short visit |
| 10 | South Island loop, or both in a rush | Most South Island trips |
| 14 | Both islands, flying the middle leg | Most first visits |
| 21 | Both islands by road and ferry | Walkers, slower trips |
Count driving days as travel days. A four-hour drive with stops for views takes most of a day, and the long-haul flight in usually costs you the first one too.
New Zealand itinerary for 7 days
Choose an island. The North Island week suits geothermal country and culture; the South Island week suits mountains and lakes.
North Island, from Auckland:
- Days 1-2, Auckland. The harbour, the waterfront and a ferry to one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
- Day 3, Hobbiton and Rotorua. The Hobbiton Movie Set tour at Matamata takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Rotorua is about 3 hours from Auckland without the stop.
- Day 4, Rotorua. Geothermal parks such as Te Puia and, south of town, Wai-O-Tapu.
- Day 5, Taupō. One hour south of Rotorua, on the shore of Lake Taupō.
- Day 6, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. A full day; see below.
- Day 7, Wellington. Te Papa, the waterfront and the cable car.
South Island, from Christchurch:
- Day 1, Christchurch. The central city and the Botanic Gardens.
- Day 2, Lake Tekapo. The Church of the Good Shepherd, and the night sky of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
- Day 3, Aoraki/Mount Cook. The Hooker Valley Track, 10 km and 3 hours return, according to DOC.
- Day 4, on to Queenstown. About 3 hours 30 minutes from Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Days 5-7, Queenstown and Milford Sound. Our guide to the best time to visit Queenstown plans these days in detail.

New Zealand itinerary for 14 days
- Days 1-2, Auckland.
- Day 3, Hobbiton, then Rotorua.
- Day 4, Rotorua, or Waitomo’s glowworm caves instead.
- Day 5, Taupō, then on to National Park village or Tūrangi.
- Day 6, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
- Days 7-8, Wellington.
- Day 9, fly to Christchurch and drive to Lake Tekapo.
- Day 10, Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Days 11-14, Queenstown, with one full day for Milford Sound, then fly home.
Flying from Wellington to Christchurch saves a day. With three weeks, cross Cook Strait on the ferry instead, and take the Coastal Pacific train from Picton to Christchurch between September and April.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 20.2 km one way and takes 7 to 8 hours between November and April, DOC says. From May to October it is an expert route with snow and avalanche risk.
The road ends have a 4-hour parking limit, so most people book a shuttle, about NZD 40, and you need a free track booking to use one.
How do you get around New Zealand?
By car, mostly. Trains and ferries cover a few scenic routes, and domestic flights cover the long gaps.
| Leg | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland to Rotorua | Car | About 3 hr |
| Rotorua to Taupō | Car | About 1 hr |
| Wellington to Picton | Interislander ferry | 3 hr 30 |
| Christchurch to Aoraki/Mount Cook | Car | About 4 hr 30 |
| Aoraki/Mount Cook to Queenstown | Car | About 3 hr 30 |
| Queenstown to Milford Sound | Car | About 5 hr |
The drive times come from the Rotorua tourism office, DOC and RealNZ. RealNZ puts Christchurch to Queenstown direct at 486 km and 7 hours 15 minutes.
The scenic trains are run by Great Journeys New Zealand, and none of them runs every day all year.
- Northern Explorer: Auckland to Wellington, southbound Monday, Thursday and Saturday; northbound Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
- Coastal Pacific: Picton to Christchurch, daily from 1 September to 30 April, no service in winter.
- TranzAlpine: Christchurch to Greymouth across the Southern Alps, daily, but not over Easter (26-29 March 2027) or Labour Weekend.
Where to base yourself
Two or three nights in each base works better than a new bed every night. These are the bases the routes above use.
| Base | Nights | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland, central city | 2 | Ferries, the waterfront |
| Rotorua, central | 2 | Geothermal parks, Hobbiton |
| National Park village or Tūrangi | 1-2 | Tongariro shuttles |
| Wellington, Te Aro | 2 | Te Papa, Cuba Street |
| Lake Tekapo or Twizel | 1-2 | Night sky, Aoraki/Mount Cook |
| Queenstown, town centre | 3-4 | Lake, Milford Sound |
Twizel is the nearest town with a supermarket to Aoraki/Mount Cook, about an hour away. This guide gives no hotel prices: we found no official, dated source for room rates that change with every school holiday.

What things cost in 2026
Most of New Zealand’s best days are free: the tracks, the lakes and the lookouts. The costs are in the tickets, the car and the fuel.
| Ticket | Adult price, 2026 |
|---|---|
| NZeTA and visitor levy | From NZD 117 |
| Hobbiton Movie Set tour | NZD 130 |
| Waitomo Glowworm Caves | From NZD 85 |
| Te Papa, international visitors | NZD 35 |
| Tongariro shuttle | About NZD 40 |
| Skyline Gondola, Queenstown | NZD 69 |
Te Papa charges international visitors aged 16 and over, and the ticket is valid for 48 hours. Waitomo’s prices run from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. At Aoraki/Mount Cook, DOC charges NZD 25 a day to park at White Horse Hill, where the Hooker Valley Track starts.
A sample day’s tickets for one adult, before room, food and fuel:
- Hobbiton day: NZD 130.
- Tongariro day: about NZD 40 for the shuttle; the track is free.
- Wellington day: NZD 35 for Te Papa.
- Aoraki/Mount Cook day: NZD 25 for parking; the walk is free.
- Queenstown day one: NZD 228 for the gondola with three luge rides and the TSS Earnslaw cruise.
When is the best time to visit New Zealand?
February to April for most trips: summer warmth, settled weather and fewer people after the school holidays. NIWA’s 1991-2020 normals put Auckland’s average February high at 24.4°C (76°F) and Queenstown’s January high at 22°C (72°F).
| Months | What to expect | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Dec to Jan | Long days, busiest | School holidays |
| Feb to Apr | Warm, settled | Book Tongariro shuttles |
| May to Jun | Cool, quiet | Short days |
| Jul to Sep | Ski season in the south | Snow on alpine roads |
| Oct to Nov | Spring, changeable | Wind and rain |
The south is colder than the north. Queenstown’s July high averages 8°C against 14.6°C in Auckland, and DOC warns that access to Aoraki/Mount Cook may be limited from June to September by snow.
What is the cheapest time to visit New Zealand?
May and June. Stats NZ counted 186,753 overseas visitor arrivals in June 2025 and 190,593 in May, the two lowest months of the year, against 502,640 in December.
- May is the best value: autumn is ending, most tours still run, and the ski crowds have not arrived.
- June is quieter still, but the Coastal Pacific train is not running and the alpine passes can need chains.
- Avoid December and January, when overseas visitors and New Zealand’s own summer holidays fill the same beds.
Queenstown is the exception from late June, when its ski season starts and rooms fill again.
New Zealand’s holidays to plan around
On public holidays, campsites, ferries and rental cars fill with New Zealanders. Book around these dates.
| Holiday | Date |
|---|---|
| Christmas and Boxing Day | 25-26 Dec 2026 |
| Waitangi Day | 6 Feb 2027 |
| Easter | 26-29 Mar 2027 |
| King’s Birthday | 7 Jun 2027 |
| Matariki | 25 Jun 2027 |
| Labour Day | 25 Oct 2027 |
The others are 1 and 2 January and ANZAC Day on 25 April. Each region also has its own anniversary day.
Is it worth visiting New Zealand?
Yes, if you can give it ten days or more. Few countries put glaciers, volcanoes, fiords and geothermal valleys within a day’s drive of each other, and most of it is free to walk.
It is not a cheap or quick trip. The flight is long from almost anywhere except Australia, the distances are bigger than they look, and the weather can close a road or a cruise. If you only have five days, give them to one region, such as Queenstown, rather than the whole country.
What goes wrong on a first New Zealand trip
- Planning drives off the map. The routes are slower than the distances suggest.
- Undeclared food or dirty boots, which can mean an instant NZD 400 fine at the airport.
- Driving to the Tongariro car park. The 4-hour limit makes a day walk impossible from there.
- Counting on the Coastal Pacific in winter. It does not run from May to August.
- Leaving Milford Sound for your last day. Weather closes the road, so keep a spare day.
If your plan falls apart on the day
- Check the road. Snow can close the road to Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Milford road; check highway conditions before you leave.
- Swap the order. Move the Tongariro Crossing or Milford Sound to a better-forecast day.
- Use the wet day indoors: Te Papa, the Waitomo caves or Rotorua’s geothermal parks.
- Call 111, New Zealand’s emergency number, for police, fire or an ambulance.
