How Many Days in Okinawa? A 4-Day Plan, Costs and Island Trips

The short answer
How many days in Okinawa you need depends on the islands: four days covers the main island for most first visits, with one day each for Naha, the south, the north and a Kerama island. Give it a week to add Ishigaki or Miyako. Hire a car for the north, and go in April or November.
Okinawa is not one city but a chain of islands, and the main island alone runs over 100 km from north to south. A plan that treats it like a weekend in Naha misses most of what people fly there for.
This guide sets out a four-day plan, the 2026 ticket prices, the new hotel tax arriving in 2027, where to stay and which islands justify extra nights. Every price was checked against the operator’s own site in October 2026.
Before you book: what to sort out first
- Entry rules. US and UK passport holders can visit Japan without a visa for up to 90 days as tourists, according to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other nationalities should check the visa requirements by country first. Rail passes, holiday weeks and routes that join the cities are in our guide to how many days in Japan.
- Departure tax. Japan’s International Tourist Tax rose from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per departure on 1 July 2026. Airlines usually add it to the fare.
- A driving permit. US and UK drivers need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, carried with their home licence and passport. Get it before you leave home.
- A data plan. You will lean on maps for buses and driving; check which iPhones support eSIM before you buy one.
- Travel insurance. Typhoons cancel ferries and flights each summer, so read whether travel insurance is worth it before you book.
How many days in Okinawa do you need?
Four days is the comfortable answer for a first trip to the main island. Fewer than three means choosing between the north and the islands, because each takes a full day.
| Days | What you see | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 2-3 | Naha, Shuri Castle, the south | A short break |
| 4 | Add the north and a Kerama island | Most first visits |
| 5-6 | Add beach days and Chatan | A beach holiday |
| 7+ | Add Ishigaki or Miyako by air | Island hopping |
The fourth day matters most. Zamami and the other Kerama islands are what many visitors remember, and a day trip there leaves no room for anything else that day.
A day-by-day Okinawa itinerary
Each day keeps to one part of the island, so the time goes on sights rather than driving back and forth.
Day 1: Naha and Shuri Castle
- Take the Yui Rail monorail to Shuri and walk up to Shuri Castle, whose rebuilt main hall opens to the public on 23 November 2026.
- Walk down the old stone-paved Kinjo-cho lane, then ride back into central Naha.
- Spend the afternoon on Tsuboya pottery street and the evening on Kokusai-dori.
Day 2: the south
- Drive or bus to the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park at Mabuni, about 22 km south of Naha.
- Allow two hours for the Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, which covers the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.
- Walk the Cornerstone of Peace, the memorial listing the names of those who died in the battle.
Day 3: the north
- Drive north on the Okinawa Expressway and stop at Cape Manzamo in Onna.
- Reach Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu, about two hours from Naha Airport by car.
- Cross the bridge to Kouri Island for the late afternoon before driving back.
Day 4: a Kerama island
- Catch the 9:00 Queen Zamami fast boat from Tomari Port in Naha, which reaches Zamami at 9:50.
- Spend the day at Furuzamami Beach or snorkelling around the island.
- Book the return boat in advance; seats sell out in peak season.
What Okinawa costs: tickets and passes in 2026
Entry tickets are modest; the ferry is the largest single cost. These are adult prices from each operator’s own site.
| Ticket | Adult price, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Shuri Castle, until 21 Nov | ¥400 |
| Shuri Castle, from 23 Nov | ¥1,000 |
| Churaumi Aquarium | ¥2,180 |
| Peace Memorial Museum | ¥300 |
| Cape Manzamo | ¥100 |
| Yui Rail 1-day ticket | ¥1,000 |
| Yui Rail 2-day ticket | ¥1,800 |
Note: many guides still quote ¥800 and ¥1,400 for the Yui Rail passes. The monorail’s own site now lists ¥1,000 and ¥1,800, valid 24 or 48 hours from purchase.
Shuri Castle closes entirely on 22 November 2026 for the main hall’s opening. To see inside the hall from 23 November, you book a timed ticket, at no extra charge.
Getting around: monorail, car or bus?
Naha is easy on the monorail. Yui Rail runs from Naha Airport to Tedako-Uranishi, reaching the Kencho-mae stop near Kokusai-dori in about 13 minutes.
Outside Naha, a car saves hours. Churaumi Aquarium says the trip from Naha Airport takes about two hours by car and roughly three hours by express bus. For the south, the museum lists bus 89 to Itoman (¥670) and then bus 82 (¥540), about one service an hour.
Okinawa’s hotel tax from February 2027
Okinawa Prefecture will start charging a hotel tax on stays from 1 February 2027. It is 2% of the room-only rate per person per night, capped at ¥2,000.
The prefecture’s own example: a ¥8,500 room is rounded down to ¥8,000, so the tax is ¥160. In six municipalities, including Ishigaki, Miyakojima, Onna and Chatan, the 2% is split between town and prefecture, but you pay the same total.
Where to stay in Okinawa
Base yourself by what you plan to do, because driving times on the main island add up.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Naha | Monorail, airport, food | City, not beach |
| Chatan | American Village, sunsets | Bus or car needed |
| Onna coast | Resort hotels, beaches | Car needed |
| Motobu, Nago | Churaumi, Kouri Island | Two hours to the airport |
Naha suits a first trip without a car, and Tomari Port for the Kerama boats is in the city. Many visitors split the stay, two nights in Naha and two on the Onna coast or in Motobu.
Is it worth visiting Okinawa?
Yes, if you want beaches and a different side of Japan. Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom until 1879, and its castles, food and music differ from the mainland.
It is less suited to a first trip to Japan built around temples and cities. If that is your plan, the Kyoto guide and Tokyo guide cover the mainland, and Okinawa is a short domestic flight away.
When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
April and late October to November are the most comfortable months. Japan Meteorological Agency averages for 1991 to 2020 put Naha’s July daily high at 31.9°C (89°F) and its January high at 19.8°C (68°F).
| Months | Average high | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Jan to Mar | 20-22°C | Mild, too cool to swim for many |
| Apr | 24°C | Warm, Golden Week at the end |
| May to Jun | 27-30°C | Rainy season, June wettest |
| Jul to Sep | 31-32°C | Hot, peak typhoon months |
| Oct to Nov | 25-28°C | Warm sea, typhoons tailing off |
The agency’s average rainy season in Okinawa runs from about 10 May to 21 June. In 2026 it ran from about 4 May to 29 June.
What is the cheapest time to visit Okinawa?
The cooler months, January to March outside the New Year week, usually have the lowest demand. The sea is cold for swimming then, so the saving suits sightseeing more than a beach trip.
- Avoid Golden Week. Japan’s public holidays on 29 April and 3 to 5 May push up domestic travel and room rates.
- Expect summer demand in July and August, when Japanese school holidays fill flights.
- Weigh typhoon risk. Averaged over 1991 to 2020, Okinawa saw about two typhoon approaches each August and September.
This guide gives no hotel prices, because rates move daily with demand.
Island trips worth an extra day
The Kerama islands are the obvious extra day. The outer islands need a flight and their own nights.
| Trip | From Naha | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Zamami | 50 min fast boat, 2 h ferry | Kerama beaches, snorkelling |
| Churaumi, Kouri | About 2 h by car | Aquarium, bridge, beaches |
| Peace Memorial Park | About 22 km south | Battle of Okinawa memorial |
| Ishigaki, Miyako | Domestic flight | Outer islands, two nights at least |
The Zamami fast boat costs ¥3,950 each way for adults, and the slower Ferry Zamami ¥2,900. Each passenger also pays a ¥100 island entry tax. Tickets are issued on the day, so reserve by phone first.
What goes wrong on an Okinawa trip
- Cancelled boats. Rough seas cancel Kerama sailings at short notice; on 8 October 2026, Zamami’s second fast boat was cancelled.
- The wrong driving permit. A permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention is not valid in Japan, and rental desks will refuse it.
- Underestimating distance. The north takes a full day from Naha, and expressway traffic builds in the evening.
- Shuri Castle closure. The whole park shuts on 22 November 2026, and the paid area opens only from noon on 23 November.
If your plan falls apart on the day
- Swap the days if the sea is rough, putting Naha or the south on the windy day and Zamami on a calm one.
- Check the Zamami Village site each morning; it posts each morning which of that day’s sailings will run.
- Use the aquarium as a rainy-day plan, since most of the north is outdoors.
- Ask the tourist information desk at Naha Airport for closures and bus routes.
